Noel Witts - Professor of Performing Arts

Noel Witts, Professor of Performing Arts

Lecture 2011

For the last 10 years I have been busy developing undergraduate and post-graduate courses in the Performing Arts at a variety of UK universities.

I’ve also been developing international contacts for young theatre practitioners in Poland, Romania, Armenia, and other European countries. Subjects in which I am interested include: Contemporary European Performance Practice, European Cultural Policy, the theatre of Tadeusz Kantor, and Contemporary Scenography.

I’m interested in advising and teaching approaches to these subjects in the course of proving the importance of the performing arts to the cultural development of societies world-wide. I have made an international perspective a crucial part of my approach to teaching and consultancy and enjoy the pleasure of discovering new performance practitioners wherever I go. I also keep myself updated on performance developments as well as research in performance.

I was born in Swansea, South Wales and did a degree in English in at the University of Leeds, where my theatrical interest started. Some years working for BBC Radio in London extended this and led me to develop performing arts courses in higher education.  I’m married to Krys, whose father was Polish, have three grown-up children and two grandchildren.
