FLARE festival, Manchester, July 2011

July 11, 2011

Just back from an extraordinary few days of new theatre work from a set of emerging European practitioners – young professional theatre makers who will hopefully be setting the agenda for future Manchester International and other festivals – Alex Poots, please note. FLARE is the brainchild of Neil Mackenzie of Manchester Metropolitan University, where he teaches contemporary theatre. MMU and Salford University supported financially  plus the essential volunteer admin team. Over 120 new companies applied to to part of FLARE, and we saw shows from : Russia,Spain,Portugal, Denmark,Netherlands, France, and the UK – a really important showcase of emerging, and sometimes emerged, talent. The week also consisted of discussions and workshops where the different approaches could be explored.  There are few international meetings of this kind in the UK, which will become even more essential as the arts and humanities faculties in our universities cope with the lack of government support. It was clear from the festival shows that our European friends have enviable opportunities ( and possible funding) that we lack here, and we should support and nurture initiatives such as FLARE.  So congratulations all round on plugging an essential gap in our performance life in the UK.
