Noel Witts - Professor of Performing Arts

Linda Ludwin

October 7, 2011

Heard last week of the death of Linda, one of he founders of the Performing Arts degree course at Leicester in the 80s, along with Oliver Bennet, myself and Gavin Bryars.Linda, along with  Oliver Bennet was one of the mainstays of this innovative degree in Performing Arts  at Leicester Polytechnic ( now De Montfort University) in the late 70s and 80s. I remember above all her committment , her combativeness and her  sheer positivity, working with a group of now, no doubt, distinguished people, to help establish the discipline of Arts Management  as a viable option in Higher Education. We should all remember today that our area has always needed its advocates to persuade the powers that be that  the arts need managers, entrepreneurs, visionaries,  people that can empower cultural activity to be a motor for social and economic change in society. Linda was one of those people and , while mourning her loss, we need to remember the  pioneering spirit that, hopefully, will remain with us., and that was taken to many places after those early Leicester days.
