GIFT Festival at Gateshead

May 1, 2012

This weekend I’m off to the second edition of the GIFT (Gateshead International Festival of Theatre), the brainchild of Kate Craddock of Northumbria University. This festival is unique in many ways. First it is sited in Gateshead, not Newcastle. ( For those of you not aware of the developmental conflicts between these two areas on each side of the River Tyne, this is still a live issue). What Kate has done brilliantly is to find a real gap in the presentation of new and emerging performance work from the UK and other countries, and has constructed a programme which presents work which is  asking questions about 2012 theatre, its origins, and its audiences. Have a look at the website and you will see what I mean. I am there conducting a series of discussions about the work, but also about the importance of such events as GIFT in re-generating Gateshead as a forum/focus for new performance work. While we hear and read about new performance in the south of the UK ( Brighton etc.), apart from the Edinburgh Fringe there are few northern opportunities for emerging work to be shown, and this GIFT festival, now into its second year, has begun to prove itself as a major player in the UK performance framework, as it changes under our present Culture Secretary. ( he maybe no more when you read this, but somehow I doubt it!)
