Observer ‘Theatre’ critic

May 19, 2012

Dear Editor, Am I alone in despairing of the scope of your theatre critic’s coverage? We are living in an age where the whole notion of what constitutes ‘theatre’ and where it now takes place is up for grabs, yet your theatre critic dutifully trudges weekly to London’s West End( and some satellites)  ,to give us news of what new work is being presented as a ‘play”. True, there are occasional excursions outside London – recently to Brighton, where she managed to encounter a Danish group offering a “take” on ” Hamlet”, ( which of course implies that there is a true “Hamlet”, which is known to your critic). It was also notable that your coverage of Robert Wilson’s theatre piece “Einstein on the Beach ” was entrusted to your music critic!  Can you please revise the scope of  what you regard as “theatre ” for your critic? Contrast with your art critic, who has to contend with : film , installation, exhibition, environmental work, which reflects the way in which visual arts have diversified over the last 20 years. Can you refer your theatre critic to the present history of theatre as an emerging form, rather than  as being ossified in the writer/director/ framework with which she is , apparently , happy, with best wishes for an expanded coverage, Noel Witts
