Kantor Posters, Edinburgh 1976

Part of the Demarco Archive, Edinburgh

I’ve just completed a four year consultancy at Leeds Metropolitan University helping develop a new area of Performing Arts, which now has two degree courses, one post-graduate course, and 4 current PhD students – a major achievement in a short time. I’m planning a revision of the Twentieth Century Performance Reader to bring it up to date, and also am engaged on the plan for a Twenty-first Century Performance Reader.

I am a member of the Richard Demarco Archive Trust, Edinburgh. The Demarco archive is a collection of drawings, paintings, sculpture and photographs which document Demarco’s pioneering activities in bringing European artists to the Edinburgh Festival. The archive is now being catalogued and is at Craigcrook Castle outside Edinburgh.

I am also a long-standing member of the Artistic Board of the Sibiu International Festival,Romania, the largest in what was Eastern Europe. The festival gathers together performers from many countries every May/June, when this great medieval/baroque city springs to life under its dynamic director, Constantin Chiriac. I have been responsible for  bringing many UK performances to Sibiu over 15 years.

A long term project coming to fruition is a guide to the Arts Under Communism, which will gather together key writings by a variety of artists from across communist Eastern Europe. I am planning a Summer School in Sibiu, Romania, based around the international festival there, and a projected Kantor site tour of Krakow, to take place in the autumn of 2011.  I have a chapter on Kantor in the UK to be shortly published by Black Dog Press and am researching the work of two key theatre makers from the former Eastern Europe – Silviu Purcarete and Andriy Zholdak – both of whom I’ve written about previously.
