Noel Witts - Professor of Performing Arts

Teaching & Research

Workshop In Almaty, Kazakstan, in 2005

I teach a post-graduate course at Central St Martins, University of the Arts, London. My research interests are contemporary European theatre practice in general, and Polish/Romanian theatre in particular.

I have lectured and given courses in the following countries: Greece, India, China, Serbia, Romania, Poland, Slovakia, Russia, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Kazakstan, USA. These have varied from Contemporary Performance Practices and the Theatre of Tadeusz Kantor to European Cultural Policy, Arts and Tourism, National Identity.

My current research involves studies of the work of two Russian/Romanian theatre-makers – Andriy Zholdak and Silviu Purcarete

I’ m also discussing a book on the arts under communism and something with a Romanian scholar on performance post-communism.

I’m  also revising the Twentieth Century Performance Reader , to be published by Routledge in 2012; and the possibility of editing a Twenty-first Century Reader, also a Routledge  possibility.

I’m  supervising four PhD students who are presenting their practice as the basis of their research – PhD by Published Work – and would be pleased to hear of any others who might be interested in this method of gaining a phd.
