CONTEMPORARY PERFORMANCE PRACTICES

A COURSE OF LECTURES

Noel is  co-editor of  The Twentieth Century Performance Reader (London : Routledge, 1896, 2001, 2012) and these sessions are partly based on the book, but supplemented by an extensive dvd and video collection.

These sessions trace the development of  20th/21st century performance in the UK, Europe, and the USA, with some excursions further afield.  I have been teaching this material for the last 10 years at Central St Martins, University of the Arts, London, and at Leeds Metropolitan University. I look at developments in theatre, dance, music , video, installation work paying particular attention to the times in which artists create their work and the reasons why the work is as it is. There is a particular emphasis of work from the former Eastern Europe and on dance material by artists such as Merce Cunningham and Pina Bausch, as well as performance material from UK companies such as Forced Entertainment and Blast Theory. The material can be presented as a sequence over a week, weekend, or as individual sessions, tailored to different audiences in different countries.
