Noel Witts - Professor of Performing Arts

Writing & Broadcasting

I have recently published a book on the Polish director/theatre-maker Tadeusz Kantor (Routledge, 2010) which introduces this extraordinary work to UK audiences. It was described as “this admirably clear book” in the Times Literary Supplement, and in New Theatre Quarterly as “full and rich” and “opening up an otherwise quite inaccessible director/artist to much wider reception.”

Over many years I have made a dozen  theatre documentary theatre programmes for BBC Radio 3 on Poland, Germany, Russia, Romania.

I’ve also created three stage documentaries based on Russian and Soviet history, specifically a piece based on the performance of Shostakovich’s Seventh Symphony during the siege of Leningrad.

I have given recent conference papers on:  Samuel Beckett, the legacy of Martin Esslin, radical productions of Wagner’s Ring Cycle, Research in the Performing Arts, and British Political Theatre. For several years I was chair of CONCEPTS, a UK based consortium aiming to make cultural links between West and Eastern Europe in the post-communist years, holding conferences in: Portugal, Serbia, Israel, Bulgaria, London and York.

I have recently completed a documentary play based on Chloe Hooper’s The Tall Man, a story of an aboriginal trial in Australia, and am considering a verbatim piece based on Orlando Figes’ The Whisperers.
